About the Salamanda Swing Band

The story so far...

The Salamanda Swing Band was borne out of a desire to play the much-loved music from the golden age of the dance and big bands of the 1930s. Frustrated by the lack of opportunities to play such music in our beautiful part of Dorset, we decided the only solution would be to start our own band. So, on 11 March 2018 the Salamanda Swing Band was born!

The original plan was to form a small dance band, but we soon discovered there were a number of like-minded musicians with the desire to perform this fabulous music. The band has now grown to a membership of 18 musicians from Swanage and beyond. The band comprises trumpets, trombones, saxes, double bass, guitar, piano and percussion, along with guest singers.

Our current repertoire includes music by Cole Porter, Glen Miller, George Gershwin, Duke Ellington and Irving Berlin as well as big band arrangements of more contemporary hits.

The Salamanda Swing Band has performed at various high profile events within Swanage and the surrounding area, including the Wessex Festival, Swanage Jazz Festival and the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Celebrations. We also host our own regular dances.

This website continues to be a work in progress, and we aim to add more content due course. In the meantime, please explore the site, and feel free to get in touch if you want to find out more about us.

We are very grateful to Louise Leffler for her photos of the band, and for allowing us to reproduce them on this website.
